Correcting vertical maxillary excess with miniplates has numerous benefits when compared to surgical impaction, as it manages to induce vertical bone remodeling by correcting excess anterior maxillary height without inducing unwanted aesthetic effects such as nasal widening.

However, the main benefit, which has made it indispensable in our clinical practice, is that the control of the occlusal plane means that the counterclockwise rotation of the mandible happens together with the progressive correction of the maxilla. In this way, we avoid having to make large rotations of the occlusal plane during surgery, which have been associated with greater overload on the temporomandibular joint as they can promote a posterosuperior positioning of the proximal segment and a greater likelihood of torque in this segment.  This type of movement has been associated with a 4.5 times greater likelihood of post-surgical condylar resorption, which is why correction of the maxilla using advanced mechanics with miniplates is essential in cases with pre-existing joint problems.
