Os efeitos na saúde oral do tratamento da Classe II 

Especialmente nos dias de hoje, em que vivemos tempos de tratamento com alinhadores quase sem intervenção médica, precisamos informar melhor os nossos pacientes sobre as vantagens de uma abordagem de tratamento ortodôntico profissional, em termos do seu potencial em relação a melhorias na saúde geral e/ou oral.

As má oclusões de Classe II são muito frequentes e várias técnicas de tratamento estão descritas na literatura. Embora os dados sobre os efeitos dentoesqueléticos sejam abundantes na literatura, os efeitos do tratamento na saúde geral e oral raramente foram analisados.

Os pacientes também se tornam cada vez mais conscientes do fato de que os tratamentos ortodônticos não garantem o sucesso do tratamento e também têm um potencial de recidiva e, por sua vez, esperam estimativas baseadas em evidências para a estabilidade de seu tratamento.

Esta palestra dará uma visão geral sobre as evidências atuais para os três requisitos de informações do paciente mencionadas acima: efeitos do tratamento na saúde oral, sucesso do tratamento e estabilidade do tratamento.

Os participantes desta palestra serão capazes de:

• estimar os benefícios de saúde oral do tratamento da Classe II
• descrever e comparar as taxas de sucesso do tratamento da Classe II
• descrever os efeitos a longo prazo e a estabilidade do tratamento da Classe II

Oral health effects of Class II treatment

Especially in times of over-the-counter alignment therapy we need to inform our patients best about the advantages of a professional orthodontic treatment approach in terms of its potential with respect to improvements in general and/or oral health.

Class II malocclusions are very frequent and multiple treatment techniques have been described. While data on dentoskeletal effects are abundant in literature, the effects of treatment on general and oral health have seldomly been analyzed. 

Patients also become increasingly aware of the fact that orthodontic treatments have no guarantee for treatment success and also have a relapse potential and in turn expect evidence-based estimates for the stability of their treatment. 

The current lecture will give an overview on the current evidence for three of the patient information demands mentioned above (Tx effects on oral health, Tx success, Tx stability). 

Attendees of this lecture will be able to:

• estimate the oral health benefits of Class II treatment
• describe and compare the success rates of Class II treatment 
• outline the long-term effects and stability of Class II treatment
